Each spring a bus full of club members travel to the Midwest Regional American Dairy Science Association-Student Affiliate Division Conference held at a host school in the Midwest.  Attendees enjoy a weekend full of quiz bowl, workshops and many networking opportunities.  To top the weekend off members have numerous stops along the way to view the many aspects of the dairy industry.

Annual Club Banquet

soph awards

Our annual Dairy Science banquet is held in early March each year.  Parents, alumni, supporters and friends are all invited to share in the recognition of the club achievements.  Numerous scholarships and awards are given to club members.  Recognition of judging teams, outstanding sophomores and seniors, senior leadership awards, the Honorary Member and Distinguished Graduate also highlight the afternoon.

Best Butts Charity Dance

Club members plan a dance for students in the College of Ag and Life Sciences.  Each club in the college nominates one male and one female for their candidate as the best butt.  Nominees arrive and are given a container to collect money as they shake their tailfeather.  All proceeds from the night are given to charities in the Ames Community.  Past dances have raised as much as $3200!

Cake Auction

Known for its large, extravagant, and award-winning cakes donated each year for the Block and Bridle cake auction, members enjoy a week of baking and decorating a dairy themed cake.  Cakes have ranged from milk trucks to a display of all the major breeds of dairy cattle. The Dairy Science cake has taken home the “Best Club” or “Best Overall” cake nearly every year.  Proceeds from the auction contribute to scholarships in the department.

Iowa Junior Dairy Coalition

coalitiongroup

This spring event invites youth across Iowa who share an interest in the dairy industry to come together for an educational and entertaining weekend. It is open to anyone age 9-18 who is interested in learning more about every aspect of the industry. Sessions in past years have included a wide range of topics including dairy promotion, fitting, organic milk production, and dairy goat farming. Club members plan and chaperone this weekend filled with workshops, quiz bowl and farm tours.

Meeker Science Night

koppesmeeker

A new community activity, club members design a display with interactive stations to teach students of Meeker Elementary.  Topics cover all aspects of the dairy industry as well as the importance of eating dairy products for the PTO Science Night.  Students enjoy learning what cows eat, why they should eat dairy products, how milk gets to their table, and about the dairy breeds.  After stopping at all stations, kids get the chance to show off their dairy knowledge to win a 3-A-Day prize.

VEISHEA Display

Each year nestled in Kildee Hall amongst the VEISHEA celebration is the club’s educational display.  The display is designed to promote the dairy industry to ISU students and visitors participating in the VEISHEA experience.  The display contains posters, a feed exhibit, dairy breed exhibit, old milking equipment, and photos.  A Farmer Joe and Miss Daisy cut out allows visitors young and old to have their picture taken being a farmer or a cow.

Spring Picnic

As the spring semester rolls to an end and students need a break from studying for finals, the club’s spring picnic is a popular way to unwind.  Held in a local Ames park, the grills are fired up for burgers while members have a chance to show off their cooking in a potluck style meal and enjoy an afternoon of socializing and volleyball before hitting the books to finish up the semester.

Ice Cream Sales

scooping

As the club’s biggest fundraiser it takes many helping hands contribute to the making of “Homemade Dairy Science Club Ice Cream.”  In addition to mixing during fall and spring semesters, members also sell in Kildee Hall every Wednesday for students and faculty to buy and enjoy.  Of course don’t forget to stop and purchase a cup or two from the many gallons of ice cream that are mixed to sell during the VEISHEA celebration in numerous flavors.

I Milked A Cow

jon n cow
Young and old, farm experienced or not, everyone enjoys having the hands-on experience of milking a cow the old fashioned way - with their own hands.  IMAC events are held both during the university’s VEISHEA celebration as well as the Iowa State Fair and are one of the club’s biggest fundraisers.  Participants proudly walk away with a sticker proving they helped milk a cow.

National ADSA-SAD Meeting

nationalsgroup
Each summer a van full of eager students travel to the National American Dairy Science Association- Student Affiliate Division meetings held in various locations across the country.  Attendees enjoy paper presentations, workshops, National officer elections and networking during the four day conference.  ISU has started making a strong presence at the national meetings, and looks forward to competing in yearbook, scrapbook, annual report, and website competitions.

Fall BBQ

freshmen

After a summer filled with internships, study abroad trips, and milking cows students gather back on the Tuesday after classes begin for a BBQ.  Incoming freshman and transfer students are welcome to attend and learn about the club.  The evening is always filled with volleyball and stories from the summer.  Concluding the evening is the traditional watermelon auction, and of course some heated bidding to see the watermelon representing what breed will bring the highest!

Halloween Dance

koppes

A costume party and dance is hosted each fall during the ISU College of Agriculture and Life Sciences week.  Prizes for the best male, female and group costumes are given with some outstanding costumes making the decision difficult. This event is a great addition to the agriculture week activities, and by the complexity of the costumes is definitely an event looked forward to by many.

Little North American

showing
In late October, members participate in Block and Bridle club’s Little North American showmanship contest.  Whether you are new to showing dairy or consider yourself a pro, everyone is welcomed to participate in breaking a heifer to lead and clipping her to perfection for the show.  Novice or members new to showing dairy are paired with an experience member and the fun begins.  Show day is an exciting time as members get the chance to show off their new or polished skills to a Dairy Science alumni judge!

Christmas Cookie Baking and Card Party

kilmers

Members spend the afternoon baking dozens of cookies as a contribution to their Food at First community service project and for the club advisors.  After all cookies have been baked, decorated, and packaged away members gather at a local restaurant for pizza while preparing Christmas cards to send to parents, supporters, and friends of the club.  The evening comes to a close as members pile into cars to deliver their homemade cookies to the homes of the advisors, all while getting in the Christmas spirit with some classic Christmas carols.

Alison Ciancio Memorial

scholarship

The club gives out one scholarship a year in memory of a past club member, Alison Ciancio.  Alison was an active club member and was killed tragically in an accident with a drunk driver. Scholarship recipients are those applicants that most exemplify the selfless and caring qualities that made Alison a model student and special friend.  To continue the scholarship fund, club members help organize an online auction with a variety of items as well as a 5K Hoofin’ It For Alison race.

Food At First

mixing

Each month, members volunteer at the local Methodist church for a program entitled Food at First.  During the Thursday evening meal, club members cook and serve a meal for members of the Ames community that can’t simultaneously meet their needs of food and shelter.  Members do everything from purchasing the food, preparing, and cleaning up after the meal.  The club even donates money to the organization from the proceeds of the Best Butts dance.

Socials

iceskating
It takes a lot of work to run an active club like the ISU Dairy Science Club. To help bring the club members together outside the regular meetings and activities members plan a night once a month for a fun, social activity.  Monthly socials have included everything from a corn maize, ice skating, snow-tubing, bowling and mini-golf.

Intramurals

hockey

No matter what the time of year, sports enthusiasts can join in for some intramurals of all kinds.  Intramurals include, Co-Ed Ultimate Frisbee, Volleyball, Softball and Broomball as well as Men’s and Women’s divisions of each in addition to Flag Football and Ice Hockey.  Members join in the fun as everyone shares their athleticism to help bring home a coveted Intramural Champion t-shirt.

Big Brother/Big Sister Program

big sis little sis

As fall classes begin, new students are assigned a "Big Brother/Sister" who is someone to share all changing experiences new students encounter. The Big Brother/Sister invites their "Little Sibs" to all club activities.  It helps encourage young members to get involved, learn more about opportunities in the university, and help with transportation to events.
