April 2008 Minutes of the Iowa State Dairy Science Club

            President Adam Koppes call the March 8th, 2008 ISU Dairy Science Club meeting to order at 7:02pm.  Thirty-seven members and two guests were in attendance.  Vice President, Kaitlin Hanson began officer reports by mentioning that the Club clothing is in and members must pay for clothing up front as well as she will need a record of payment. Kaitlin sent around sign-ups for Fall BBQ committee and the Ciancio Memorial committee.  She mentioned that she would like to get a head start for next fall on the Ciancio committee and that we would hopefully still be able to get the Ciancio auction done this year.  Ag Council Representative, Kaleena Westby, stated that State FFA students will be on campus Monday, April 14th, and we will need 2 or 3 people to stand by the club booth and answer any questions Monday evening.  Kaleena reminded members that signed up to help with VEISHEA Ag club games to be there on Friday.  She will send out an email with the list of people that signed up and other information.  Ag Council Representative, Chad reminded the club that senior awards nominations are due this week.  Secretary Melinda Bechtel presented a shortened version of the minutes and they were approved as read.  Treasurer Aaron Palmer reported that the main account balance is $2,171.73 and he still has to take out the remainder of cost for club trip and banquet.  Aaron was happy to announce that the club came out ahead for banquet.  He also encouraged club members to pick up their clothing and pay right away to help the account.  The balance in the Coalition account is $3,439.96, $3,126.31 in the Ciancio account, and $4,017.79 in the ADSA account.  Historian Elizabeth Gaul ask for anyone who has pictures of club activates to send them to her at emgaul@iastate.edu so she can get a head start on next year’s Yearbook pictures.  Public Relations chair Juliann Balistreri noted that she put the meeting minutes in the weekly newsletter this week for members too look over so that a shorten version of the minutes can be read at the meeting.  Social / Intramural Chair Kendra Bolen, reminded members to participate in Intramurals and April’s social of the month will be mini-golf on the 17th of April which is a Thursday, please watch your email for details.  President Adam Koppes mentioned that Coalition went well and a thank-you goes to everyone that helped out.
            In committee reports, Brady Boyle announced that the Best Butt dance had been rescheduled for Thursday, April 24th at the same place, same time.  Leah Gesing noted that the Coalition went well and thanked her co-chair, Sarah, for all her help.  She also thanked her committee members and the chaperones that helped.  She also mentioned that she had extra Hoard’s posters if anyone wanted them. Leah stated that a record of 81 attendees came this year.  Finally, Leah mentioned that that thank-you letters are being finished up and asked if anyone happened to pick up her fleece because she is missing hers.  Jamison Voss sent around a sign-up for VEISHEA IMAC on Saturday morning to help set-up, wash, and work Saturday afternoon.  Melinda Bechtel mentioned that the VEISHEA Display committee working on ideas and getting things together.  She also asked for anyone who is available to help set-up Friday afternoon.  Meagan Sheehan asked members to sign up to help on Friday and Saturday to sell ice cream.  Time slots are available for all day but will need about 7-8 people to help at each time on Saturday, especially during and right after the parade.  Meagan included that she has the picnic and volleyball area reserved for May 4th for the spring picnic.  Kaleena Westby announced that the club will not be selling ice cream on Wednesday since we will be selling on Friday for VEISHEA.
            In old business, guest Emily Brewer, Iowa State Fair Competitive Events Agricultural Education Coordinator, spoke about the opportunities for the club to get involved and to let public know who the ISU Dairy Science Club is.  Opportunities include parlor narration, activity center, as well as IMAC.  Members of the club asked Emily a variety of questions about IMAC.  Dr. Kenealy mentioned that there are other issues to be discussed before final decision is made.  A motion was made by Davin Rankin, seconded by Kaitlin Hanson to commit to do IMAC at the Iowa State Fair.  Motion passed.
            In new business, Davin Rankin announced that he will be leaving in May and his spot as ADSA Representative will be open.  President Adam added that interested people would need to complete an officer application, which will be due Wednesday April 16th.  Elections will be during the September meeting.  President Adam asked graduating seniors to stand and tell the club members what their plans are for after graduation and some words of wisdom.  Kendra Bolen mentioned that she is working on planning a senior night and she will be sending an email out later with more information.  President Adam reported that National ADSA will be July 6-9th.  Adam reminded the club that Jessica Tekippe in the National president and that it would be good for the club to show their support.  Deadline for registration will be Wednesday of dead week, if interested please let Adam or Kaitlin know.
            Under Advisor comments, Dr. Kenealy mentioned that the advisors usually travel to national ADSA in a large van and that students could ride along. Industry advisor, Dr. Jennifer Feuerbach’s words of wisdom for the month were, “keep up the good work, take opportunities, and stay ahead.”  Dr. Kenealy mentioned that he was very happy with the results of Coalition and that nothing went wrong.  He congratulated the club for a good weekend and reminded members that Coalition is a great PR for the club.  Dr. Kenealy also encouraged members to help sell ice cream and help out with IMAC.  Also Dr. Kilmer and Ilene will be back this coming week.  Dr. Kenealy reported that Leo Timms is home from the hospital.  Finally, Dr. Kenealy reported that Dr. Kilmer’s wife, Mrs. K., took the ISU dairy challenge team to National Dairy challenge in Madison and the team earned platinum, which is the third year in a row that ISU has won a platinum title. 
            Several announcements were made including Food at First will be Thursday, April 13th, from 3:45- 7pm and Meeker science night will start at 5:30pm and finish about 8pm at Meeker Elementary.  The dairy science spring picnic will be Sunday, May 4, 2008 from 11-3pm.  A motion was made by Peter Schultz and seconded by Nathan Upah to adjourn the meeting. Motion passed. The meeting adjourned with Doug Wilson as our speaker.  Milk, cake and ice cream followed in the reading room.
