Joe Sebranek and students honored during the International Congress of Meat Science and Technology

During the International Congress of Meat Science and Technology held August 7 - 12 in Baltimore, Maryland Joe Sebranek was honored by the American Meat Science Association with the AMSA Distinguished Research Award. The award was established to recognize members with outstanding research contributions to the meat industry. Additionally, a student team from Iowa State's Meat Science program came home with first place honors in the product development competition. Student teams were challenged with developing a shelf-stable product that did not require refrigeration. The competition included judging of the product formulation and processing procedures, labels and packaging used, marketing and HACCP plans, and final palatability of the products. Iowa State's team created "Sweet Turkey Crumbles", a product that not only won over the judges but also caught the attention of several meat industry representatives at the meeting. Iowa State's winning team included Jeff Sindelar, Kohl Schrader, Angela Laury, Sherry Olsen and Andrew Michaelson. Team advisor was Dr. Joe Sebranek.
