ADSA DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD

A.E. "Gene" Freeman, is the 1998 recipient of the Distinguished Service Award presented by the American Dairy Society Association (ADSA). This award is the highest award given by ADSA. Dr. Freeman is Charles F. Curtiss Distinguished Professor of Agriculture and Professor of Animal Science.
Dr. Freeman was recognized for his extensive and valuable contributions to the dairy industry throughout the world.
Dr. Freeman's outstanding and very productive research program in dairy cattle breeding is one of the ways in which he has performed great service in dairy science throughout the world. He has served as major professor for 33 M.S. and 37 Ph.D. degree graduate students. Of these students, 31 are working in academic institutions in the United States and foreign countries. Many are leaders in the dairy industry. The training of these outstanding individuals may be one of his greatest contributions to the dairy industry.
Dr. Freeman's research in dairy cattle breeding focusing on development of improved breeding tools and methods has resulted in the publication of over 190 journal papers, 168 abstracts, numerous research mimeographs and popular articles. He has served on many national and international committees in his area of expertise. The fact that at least seven of these committees represent activities outside the United States attests to the far-reaching impact of his service to the dairy industry. He is a popular speaker at regional, national, and international meetings and attests to his involvement in giving service to the dairy industry throughout the world.
Dr. Freeman has served on the Editorial Board for the Journal of Dairy Science, as an ADSA Director, and on many committees within the Association. He is the recipient of countless awards and honors in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the dairy industry, including ADSA's Borden Award and the J.L. Lush Award in Animal Breeding and Genetics.
Dr. Freeman is a Fellow in the American Society of Animal Science and a Fellow in the American Association of the Advancement of Science. These are only a few of his many awards and honors.

Dr. Freeman received his B.S. degree and M.S. degree in animal breeding from West Virginia University and his Ph.D. degree in animal breeding from Cornell University. He joined the faculty at Iowa State University in 1957 as an assistant professor of Animal Science.
