Action Items/Minutes of the Business Meeting: (top)

The annual business meting of S-1008 Technical Committee was called to order at 8:10 a.m. by Chairman, Ignacy Misztal.

Registration fee of $80.00 per station was established to cover meeting costs.

The committee was asked for discussion about whether to continue with providing bound station reports to each station. It was decided that this long standing practice would be discontinued in light of the new on-line reporting requirements. Each station will provide a list of references along with either a copy of their slides or report to the secretary. The secretary will prepare an annual report and reference list for the entire committee and send it to Iowa State University for inclusion on the S-1008 web site. The prepared report will be sent within 60 days of the meeting.

Bennet Cassell moved and Steve Washburn seconded that minutes be approved as sent and previously posted to the S-1008 website and CSREES reporting site. Motion passed.

Jack McAllister was nominated as secretary for 2005 and to succeed to chair in 2006. He was elected by acclimation.

Ron Pearson agreed to serve for the next 2 years as the S-1008 representative to the US Council on Dairy Cattle Breeding. Bennet Cassell agreed to serve as backup. Their next meeting will be held on April 4, 2004 in Milwaukee, WI.

Dr. Muquarrab Qureshi presented the CSREES advisor report and comments. He presented an update on current formula funding levels for agricultural research. The committee expressed grave concern that a disproportionate amount of funding was being directed to USDA-ARS laboratories and commercial laboratories, neither of which is training graduate students. This was thought to be especially true in the areas of quantitative genetics and applied research.

Report of the resolutions committee [Gary Rogers (chair), Bennet Cassell, Jeff Berger)

  1. 1. Be it resolved that the S-1008 technical committee expresses it sincere appreciation to Ignacy Misztal and Mike Schutz for their efforts to coordinate and run a most productive meeting.

  2. 2. Be it resolved that the S-1008 technical committee express its appreciation to Dr. Muquarrab Qureshi for his commitment to our efforts by timely notification to member researchers of great opportunities at the Federal level.

  3. 3. Be it resolved that the S-1008 Technical Committee thank the Council of Dairy Cattle Breeding for inviting us to attend their fall meeting.

  4. 4. Be it resolved that the S-1008 Technical Committee expresses their appreciation to Paul Van Raden and USDA-AIPL and John Clay and DRMS for initiating, developing, and publishing the first national genetic evaluation for Daughter Pregnancy Rate in the US.

  5. 5. Hear ye! Hear ye! Be it resolved that the S-1008 Technical Committee thanks Bennet Cassell for editing and coordinating the Proceedings of the National Dairy Genetics Workshop in honor of Dr. Ben McDaniel.

  6. 6. Be it resolved that Dr. Roger Shanks is thanked for his assistance with audio/visual technologies.

George Shook moved and Jack McAllister seconded that all five resolutions be accepted as read. Motion passed. Mike Schutz will convey resolution 3 and 4 to the appropriate individuals.

Discussion was held with regard to meeting with representatives of the NC Technical Committee on reproduction. Mike Schutz and Jack McAllister will work to identify the best representatives from that committee and invite them to attend next year’s annual meeting. An offer will be extended to the NAAB sire committee to met simultaneously again.

It was moved by Les Hansen and seconded by John Cole to hold the next annual meeting on Sunday, October 16 and Monday, October 17, 2005, in Milwaukee Wisconsin. Mike Schutz will contact Kent Weigel and the NAAB Sire Evaluation Committee to determine if they would like to meet simultaneously or consecutively.

The committee instructed Jack McAllister to work with Nancy Cox (Administrative Advisor) to write a letter on behalf of the S-1008 Technical Committee to Beverly Durgan, Associate Dean of Agricultural Research at the University of Minnesota, to encourage continued support of the selection lines for large and small cows as a valuable genetic resource. Those lines are currently housed at the University of Minnesota’s Crookston Experiment Station.

In the joint session with the NAAB Sire Evaluation Committee, there was considerable discussion about ways to encourage collection of data on health traits.
