Iowa State University President Dr. Martin C. Jischke announced, at the conclusion of the Ensminger Room Dedication (October 31, 1998 in Kildee Hall), that an Ensminger Professorship in honor of David G. Topel, Dean of the College of Agriculture, would be established. Dean Topel was asked to be the first Chair of that position.
Following time spent at Auburn University as professor and department head of Animal Science, Dr. Topel joined Iowa State University and served as dean of the College of Agriculture and director for the Iowa Agriculture and Home Economics Experiment Station for 12 years. On February 1, 2000, he stepped down as the dean and returned to the Animal Science Department.
During his tenure as Dean of the College of Agriculture, Dr. Topel provided international service in Canada, China, Costa Rica, Czech Republic, Denmark, Egypt, England, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Japan, Kenya, Kyrgyzstan, Mexico, Morocco, Netherlands, Norway, Russia, Slovakia, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, Ukraine and Uzbekistan.
