Research The expansion of the corn-based fuel ethanol and biopolymers industry has led to the increase in the inclusion of corn co-products in swine diets. Typically, these feedstuffs contain a high concentration of fiber, that is also variable depending on the source and type of feedstuff used. High fiber concentration is associated with a reduced efficiency of utilization of energy, as well as having a negative impact on the digestion and utilization of nutrients such as protein, fat and phosphorus. My research project will focus on the determination of the best chemical assays to characterize fiber, the site of digestion of dietary fiber, and the impact of dietary fiber on the utilization of energy, nitrogen and phosphorus in swine diets. | |
