2022 ISU Meat Judging Team Has Strong Finish to Spring Season

The meat judging team returned home after a successful week of meat judging contests. Traveling with the team were coach and meat science graduate student Caroline Downey (Putnam, IL) and meat science graduate student Kayla Hospodarsky (Cedar Rapids). The team is also assisted by coach and program coordinator Dr. Sherry Olsen.

The Midwestern Invitational Intercollegiate Meat Judging Contest was hosted by the University of Illinois – Champaign, and the team earned second place honors behind the Illinois team (five teams in contest).  In division results, the team finished first in lamb judging, pork judging, and total placings; and finished second in beef judging, reasons, and specifications.  Ty Houston (Mondamin) was high individual in the contest, and won beef grading and specifications; was third in pork judging; fourth in total placings; and finished fifth in lamb judging. Jacob Ludeking (Norway) was third in lamb judging; Kylee Weber (Ida Grove) was third in total placings; and Danielle Winslow (Culver City, CA) was third in beef judging.

At the Southeastern Intercollegiate Meat Judging Contest hosted by The Ohio State University and the University of Kentucky, the ISU judgers returned home as the Reserve Champion Team behind the University of Illinois – Champaign (14 teams in contest).  The team won the beef judging and total placings divisions; was second in overall beef; third in beef grading; fourth in lamb judging and pork judging; and fifth in reasons and specifications. Houston was eighth high individual in the contest, as well as fourth in pork judging and eighth in beef grading. Christina Speicher (New Hampton) was ninth high individual in the contest, fourth in total placings, and seventh in beef judging and overall beef.   Winslow was tenth high individual in the contest, fifth in total placings, ninth in beef judging, eighth in overall beef, and ninth in pork judging. Weber finished ninth in lamb judging and total placings. Claire Cunningham (Trumbull, CT) was third in beef judging and eighth in total placings.
