Dairy science students return to an in-person American Dairy Science Association Annual Meeting

July 13, 2022

Five members of the Dairy Science Club at Iowa State University (Jessica Schmitt, Abigail Rogers, Elizabeth Plunkett, Regan Kramer, and Amber Engelken) ventured to Kansas City, Missouri to attend the Annual Meeting of the American Dairy Science Association® (ADSA®). There were nearly 100 students from 25 universities and 1,600 professionals from 45 different countries in attendance.

Throughout the meetings, students were able to attend a plethora of events including professional development, educational, and networking events along with competing in dairy quiz bowl, paper competitions, and poster competitions. Students were able to attend symposia, oral sessions, and poster sessions presented on many different topics presented by professional members of the organizations as well. Additionally, students voted to change the name of the Student Affiliate Division to Undergraduate Student Division (USD) to more closely align with the Graduate Student Division.

Jessica Schmitt, the outgoing ADSA-USD President, was awarded the prestigious Genevieve Christen Distinguished Undergraduate Student Award. Amber Engelken was elected as the 2022-2023 ADSA-USD Secretary-Treasurer.

The students attended the meetings as members of the American Dairy Science Association Undergraduate Student Division (ADSA-USD). The ADSA-USD is a division of the parent organization that works to develop leadership and promote scholarship among students interested in the dairy industry, and to encourage students toward careers in dairy science. There are more than 500 undergraduate student members in ADSA.

ADSA was established in 1906 as a scientific and educational association to serve the dairy and dairy-related industries. It facilitates the discovery, application and dissemination of dairy science knowledge and information.
