Department of Animal Science represents at Zoo STEM night

STEM activitySeptember 19th the Des Moines Blank Park Zoo held a STEM night geared towards 3-5th graders celebrating Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. The event focused on introducing students to different STEM careers as they had the opportunity to participate in fun activities throughout the zoo.  Amy Powell, Extension Program Specialist III as well as Animal Science students, Holly Brown and Rachel Wynn educated students with a fun ‘build a cow’ activity that focused on genetics and how traits like coat color are inherited.

Amy Powell says "This event was a great opportunity for ISU Department of Animal Science to showcase who we are and what we do. There are so many different career paths you can take with Animal Science and this opportunity not only opened kids’ eyes to these careers but also showed parents that ISU Animal Science is a great place for their kids to attain their degree to be able to work in one of those careers.”
