Iowa State meat judging team kicks off spring 2022 season

The 2022 ISU Meat Judging Team began their spring season on January 17 and competed in the 2022 National Western Intercollegiate Meat Judging Contest in Honor of R. Paul Clayton.  This contest was hosted by JBS USA and held in their beef plant in Greeley, CO. Coach Caroline Downey (Putnam, IL) travelled with the team and they finished 9th out of 11 teams. In divisions ISU was 4th in total placings; 5th in pork judging; 7th in lamb judging and reasons, 8th in beef judging, and 9th in specifications. Danielle Winslow (Culver City, CA) was 4th high individual in total placings and 14th in pork judging; Ty Houston (Mondamin, IA) was 11th in beef judging; Christina Speicher (New Hampton, IA) was 13th in lamb judging; and in the alternate division, Jacob Ludeking (Norway, IA) was 6th in total placings and 14th in total placings. Claire Cunningham (Trumbull, CT) and Kylee Weber (Ida Grove, IA) are also team members. The top 5 teams were: Texas A&M University – College Station; Texas Tech – Lubbock; West Texas A&M – Canyon; Oklahoma State University – Stillwater; and University of Illinois – Champaign/Urbana.

The team is currently preparing for the 44th Iowa State University Meat Evaluation Contest that will be held on Saturday, February 26.
