Iowa State Meat Lab Hosts the 2021 Iowa State 4H and FFA Meat Judging Contest

4H and FFA meat judging 2021The Iowa State 4H/FFA Meat Judging Contest returned to a face-to-face event on Saturday, August 28, 2021. Nearly 75 meat judgers, agricultural education instructors, and 4-H leaders, and volunteers filled the Iowa State University Meat Lab for a contest that included beef, pork, and lamb carcasses, as well as beef, pork, and lamb wholesale and/or retail cuts.

In the FFA division, the South O’Brien FFA Chapter in Paullina, was named the champion team. Coached by Mr. Eric Kumm, members included Kyan Kruse, Hudson Oolman, Leo Sells, and Claire Wagner. They will represent Iowa at the National FFA Competition this fall in Indianapolis, IN.

Reserve champion honors in the FFA division went to the Muscatine FFA Chapter coached by Mr. Dave Tometich. Team members included Nyssa Brown, Robert Carver, Jenna Lovstad, and James Sprague. This team will represent Iowa at the 2022 National Western in Denver, CO.

In the 4-H division, teams from O’Brien and Van Buren counties were combined and completed for champion honors. The champion senior team was comprised of Brett Evans and Lydia Flinders (O’Brien); and Nehemiah Westercamp (Van Buren) and they will represent Iowa at the 2021 American Royal 4H Meat Judging Contest hosted by Kansas State University this fall. The champion junior team members included Gabe Moermond, Austin Negus, and Logan Dau (O’Brien); and Elijah Westercamp (Van Buren).
