The Iowa State University Intercollegiate Meat Judging Team and Coach Caroline Downey travelled to Nebraska Beef, Omaha, NE, to compete in the American Royal Intercollegiate Meat Judging Contest on October 17, 2021. Team members include: Kaitlyn Baerg (Stanley); Taylor Clark (Swan); Bergin DeBruin (Rock Rapids); Kayle Eivins (Winterset); Kayla Hospodarsky (Cedar Rapids); Charli Mosier (Tipton); and Emily Saeugling (Atlantic).
The top five teams were: Kansas State University - Manhattan; Oklahoma State University - Stillwater; Angelo State University – San Angelo, TX; Texas Tech University - Lubbock; and Colorado State University – Fort Collins. The ISU team finished 11th and in divisions, the ISU team placed 7th in lamb judging; and 10th in beef grading, beef judging, pork judging, placings, and reasons. Debruin was 8th in specifications with a perfect 100 score; 10th in beef judging; and 10th in overall beef. Hospodarsky finished 10th in beef grading. Additionally, Clark dropped only 14 points in placings.
In the alternate division, the three-member ISU team finished in 7th place overall and in each division. The top five teams were: Kansas State University – Manhattan; West Texas A&M – Canyon; and Texas Tech – Lubbock finished out the top five teams. Mosier was 10th in beef grading.
The team will be traveling to Friona, TX, at the end of October to compete in their final contest of the season at the Cargill High Plains. Our appreciation is extended to everyone who has supported this team throughout their intercollegiate meat judging careers.
