ISU Livestock Judging Camp this Week

June 15, 2017

CowThe Jeff and Deb Hansen Agriculture Student Learning Center will be alive with kids this week.  The livestock judging camp will take place June 12th-14th and is geared towards 4-H and FFA members enrolled in grades 7-12.  Participants will stay in the ISU dorms and the livestock judging team (coached by Dr. Chris Cassady) will provide supervision. Beef, sheep and swine will come from the teaching farm.

The camp was formed in the summer of 2004 by the 2004 Livestock Judging team. Clint Schwab, (Collaborating Assistant Professor and  Director of Genetics at The Maschhoffs) was the coach while team members included Kristen Boe, Kim Lewis, Dawn Clingan, Ben Drescher, Dustin Snackenberg, Sam Ruble, Adam Conover, Pete Burmeister, Rob Rudolphi, Matt Schneider and Justin Fix.    This year the judging camp will be run by Livestock Judging Coach, Dr. Chris Cassady,  and his judging team.

According to club members, the reason for starting the judging camp was to engage more Iowa and Midwest youth in the academic discipline of livestock judging and evaluating good livestock.  More importantly this gives the participants training to communicate and think critically about decisions being made regarding choices which help later in life.
