The 1931 team made a record that had never before been equalled, by winning first place in the two major contests of the year. They placed first in Kansas City again fifteeh other teams. Joseph Caputo won high individual honors in a field of seventy-five contestants. Two weeks later, at the Chicago International, with twenty competing teams, the Iowa State team again ranked first, winning over Oklahoma by a margin of fourteen points. Martin Fabricius placed fourth and Robert Stewart ninth in individual scores, with one hundred competitors.
