The sun rose early for Iowa State's 1939 Livestock Team. In fact, the Cyclone horse judges opened the season with a first at the National Belgian Horse Show contest at Waterloo, with Kenneth Fulk, Richard Bruene and Robert Grummer capturing first, second and third individual places respectively. At the American Royal, Fulk decisively judged himself into the top individual spot as the team captured second place. Fulk was top sheep judge at the Chicago International, but the team slipped to fifteenth place.
