2010 Meat Judging Team

Southeastern Intercollegiate Meat Judging Contest: This contest was the first contest for the team and was hosted by The Ohio State University, Columbus, OH; the Ohio Pickaway Correctional Institution, Orient, OH; and the University of Kentucky, Lexington, KY on April 16 - 17. Team members include:  Lauren Chesmore, Grimes; Kandi Hinkel, Mondamin; Lori Klootwyk, Knoxville; Alecia Moser, Garden Grove; Jordann Wenzel, Latimer; and Anna Wolfe, Hudson. The team finished in ninth place in the field of 12 teams comprised of 59 individuals. Evaluated were classes of beef, lamb, and pork carcasses as well as wholesale cuts. Additional results included: Pork Judging- 1st; Lamb Judging- 3rd; Total Reasons- 3rd; Total Placing-4th; Beef Grading-7th; Beef Judging- 7th; and Overall Beef- 8th. Individual awards included: Chesmore– Pork Judging-1st, Beef Judging-2nd, Total Reasons-8th; Hinkel– Total Reasons- 5th; Klootwyk– Total Placing- 10th; Moser– Lamb Judging- 2nd, Beef Grading- 4th, Total Placing- 5th, and Overall Beef- 9th; and Wolfe– Lamb Judging- 4th and Total Placing- 6th.                        

33rd Annual Iowa State University Meat Evaluation Contest: This was the team’s first fall competition and the event was hosted by the Iowa State University Meat Laboratory on October 9. In addition to carcasses and wholesale cuts, retail cuts, fresh bellies, slab bacon, boneless hams, summer sausage, and turkey carcasses were also evaluated. The team finished in sixth place amongst eight teams and 49 individuals.  Additional results included: Lamb Judging- 4th, and Beef Judging and Total Reasons- 5th. Individual awards included: Wolfe – Lamb Judging- 4th and Wenzel – Beef Judging 9th. Hinkel earned ISU High Individual honors.                                                                                                       

American Royal Intercollegiate Meat Judging Contest: The contest in Omaha, NE was held on October 17 and hosted by Nebraska Beef.  Fourteen teams with 88 contestants competed in the event.  The team placed twelfth in the contest.  Additional results included: Total Placing- 4th and Lamb Judging and Pork Judging- 8th.  Individual awards included: Klootwyk - Total Placing- 1st (no points dropped in placing classes thus setting a record in intercollegiate meat judging contests) and Wenzel – Total Placing- 9th.                                               

The International (National Championship) Intercollegiate Meat Judging Contest: The final competition for the 2010 team was The International held in Dakota City, NE on November 14 and hosted by Tyson Fresh Meats.  Seventeen teams with 97 contestants competed in the event and the ISU team placed thirteenth in the contest. Additional results included: Pork Judging- 8th; Beef Grading- 9th; Lamb Judging- 10th; and Total Reasons- 10th.  Lori Klootwyk was a recipient of the Rachel Hamilton Memorial “Spirit” Award.
