"36th Annual Iowa State University Meat Evaluation Contest: The 36th Annual Iowa State University Intercollegiate Meat Judging Contest was held on Saturday, February 22. Eleven teams and nearly 80 students competed in the event hosted in the meat lab. Teams represented included: Iowa State University - Ames, Kansas State University - Manhattan, Michigan State University - East Lansing, North Dakota State University - Fargo, South Dakota State University - Brookings, University of Florida - Gainesville, University of Illinois - Champaign/Urbana, University of Kentucky - Lexington, University of Missouri - Columbia, University of Nebraska - Lincoln, and University of Wyoming - Laramie. Iowa State University finished in 4th place behind the University of Wyoming, Kansas State University, and the University of Missouri. The ISU team was 1st in Lamb Judging; 3rd in Pork Judging; 4th in Specifications, Boneless Hams, and Summer Sausage; and 5th in Total Placings and Reasons. Branderhorst was 9th in Reasons; Frank was 1st in Lamb Judging and 7th in Pork Judging and Reasons; Schulte was 7th in Total Placings and earned the ISU High Individual Award; and Sexton was 4th in Lamb Judging.
Southeastern Intercollegiate Meat Judging Contest: The Iowa State University Meat Judging Team repeated as champions of the 2014 Southeastern Intercollegiate Meat Judging Contest held April 11 and 12 in Columbus, OH and Lexington, KY. The team placed 1st and 3rd in the competition that hosted 12 teams and 70 contestants. The team placed 1st and 2nd in Beef Grading; 1st and 4th in Beef Judging; 1st and 3rd in Overall Beef; 1st in Reasons; 2nd in Pork Judging; 2nd and 3rd in Specifications; and 4th in Overall Placings. In the competition, 5 of the team members earned top 10 individual honors in the overall contest. Results included: Berger - 4th High Contest Individual, 1st in Pork Judging and Reasons, 3rd in Beef Grading, 5th in Overall Beef; Branderhorst - 2nd High Contest Individual, 1st in Total Placings, 2nd in Beef Judging, 3rd in Overall Beef and Reasons, 4th in Lamb Judging, 7th in Pork Judging; Edwards - 11th in Overall Beef; Frank - 6th High Contest Individual, 1st in Beef Judging and Overall Beef, 2nd in Beef Grading and Reasons; Amanda Patterson - 5th in Pork Judging, 7th in Specifications; Brian Patterson - 5th in Total Placings; Schulte - 3rd High Contest Individual, 2nd in Overall Beef, 4th in Beef Grading, Beef Judging, and Specifications, 7th in Reasons; Sexton - 7th High Contest Individual, 1st in Specifications, 6th in Beef Grading.
