Meat Judging Contest

The 39th Annual Iowa State University Meat Evaluation Contest was hosted in the Iowa State University Meat Laboratory on Saturday, February 11.  Thirteen teams competed in this annual event and included: Angelo State University, Iowa State University, Kansas State University, Michigan State University, Oklahoma State University, Purdue University, South Dakota State University, Tarleton State University, Texas A&M University, The Ohio State University, University of Missouri, University of Nebraska, and West Texas A&M University.  This was the largest ISU contest in the history of the event with 105 contestants.  

The top five teams were: Oklahoma State University, Texas A&M University, Kansas State University, South Dakota State University, and Iowa State University. Additionally, the Iowa State University judges finished second in lamb judging; and fourth in pork judging, reasons, specifications, team ham, and team summer sausage. Stephanie Martin, Vincent, was high individual in lamb judging, followed by Beth Zuber, Marengo, who finished second in the same division. Drew Wilson, Delhi, was second high individual in specifications, and was awarded the Dr. and Mrs. F.C. Parrish, Jr., award for earning the top award for the Iowa State University team. Team members also included: Annika Johnson, Hartford; Austin Lanphier, New Sharon; and Taylor Wulf, Hudson. The team is coached by Dr. Sherry Olsen; Michaella Fevold, Story City; Rachel Wynn, Bedford, IN; and Laura Yoder, Kalona.  

During this meat judging weekend, the 1987 and 1997 Iowa State University Meat Judging Teams were recognized at the Saturday evening awards banquet and an alumni meat judging contest was hosted on Sunday, February 12.  Nearly 40 judgers competed in a fun event that drew alumni from all across the state.  Organized by 2015 team members Alex Conover, Holstein, and Carl Frame, Osseo, WI, this contest was enjoyed by all and intentions are to continue this alumni judging contest as a part of future Iowa State University Meat Evaluation Contests.
