ISU Wins at National Barrow Show

The Department of Animal Science at Iowa State University has enjoyed unprecedented success at the 2015 National Barrow in Austin, Minnesota. The Swine Teaching Farm started the week by earning Reserve Champion Purebred Truckload honors, Champion Crossbred Truckload honors, and Grand Champion Truckload on Monday. This honor was also bestowed on the teaching farm last year, completing the farm’s quest to go back to back.  Livestock Judging Awardees

 

The ISU Teaching Farm continued its winning ways on Tuesday capturing Champion Duroc Boar and Champion Duroc Gilt honors. This is the second year in a row the farm has exhibited the Champion Duroc Boar. The boar sold for $20,000 to Swine Genetics International and Vegas Showpigs. The Champion gilt sold for $1,750 to Daryl Mappes. Livestock Judging Team

The Iowa State Livestock judging Team also received numerous accolades during its time in Austin. The team brought home 3rd High Overall honors, and finished 4th in Reasons and 2nd in Placings. The team was led by Dan Ammann who finished 1st Overall, 3rd in placings and tied for 1st in Reasons, and Bailey Core who was awarded 5th in Reasons. Dan etched his name in NBS history by becoming the 4th High Individual in a row from Iowa State University, besting the field of 119 contestants by 6 points.  This feat marks the only time in the history of the National Barrow Show that any University has field the High Individual Overall 4 years in a row.
