There are several study abroad opportunities that students can participate in through the Department of Animal Science this year. Students gain valuable life skills, strengthen leadership skills, experience personal growth and broaden their worldview by having exposure to new cultures through these study abroad programs.
2016 Brazil Beef and Horse Industry Study Team

Beginning May 20, a team of 15 students and two faculty members from the Animal Science Department will be studying the beef and horse industries in central Brazil. Students will be examining the structure of the bovine and equine industries in Brazil with attention to the distinctive differences in environmental management and resource usage, markets and management style in the raising of horses and beef cattle. Heritage Breeds - United Kingdom

May 7 - 27, students get the opportunity to tour the farms and regions of the United Kingdom to learn about purebred livestock and breed development and to see where many animal breeds originated. Visits to multiple rare breed farm parks will allow students access to more than 25 rare breeds of cattle, pigs, sheep, horses and goats. Additional stops include a visit to Haven Herefords to see the oldest breeding herd of Hereford cattle in the world, visits to the Royal Windsor Horse Show, to the Suffolk Punch Trust Colony to see the oldest registered flocks of Suffolk Sheep, Chillingham Wild Cattle which are thought to be more rare than the giant panda, stops to see Angus, Limousins, and Galloway beef cattle, visits to Clydesdale and Ayrshire farms and a visit to Ballindalloch Castle to see the oldest Aberdeen Angus herd in the world.
Cultural visits include a stop at Stonehenge, the World War II American Cemetery at Cambridge, UNESCO World Heritage Site Hadrian’s Wall, and the historic city of Edinburgh.
Study of Japanese and Chinese Pork Industry

May 8- 26, ISU students will get introduced to the swine industry in Japan and China, including production systems, feed processing, and meat processing. Students will witness swine production, business, and trade in Japan and China and compare them to the U.S. Students will also visit historical sites and experience the education system, culture, history, political system, and economy of both countries.
