The 2016 Iowa State University Meat Judging Team began the fall judging season at the Hormel National Barrow Show Intercollegiate Meat Judging Contest held at the Hormel Research and Development Facility in Austin, MN on Saturday, September 10. This contest tested both undergraduate and graduate students, on their knowledge of both fresh and processed pork products.
The undergraduate team finished fourth in the overall contest and won the processed meat division. In the processed meat division, Michaella Fevold, Story City, was second high individual; Laura Yoder, Kalona, was sixth; and Austin Egolf, Dillsburg, PA, was eighth. Zack Peppmeier, Shannon City, was eighth high individual in the overall contest. In the alternate division, Paige Whitney, Ida Grove, was the high individual; and Rachel Wynn, Bedford, IN, was fourth. Michael Stender, Aurelia, is a member of this squad who also competed in the event. The team is coached by Dr. Sherry Olsen; Alex Conover, Holstein; and Carl Frame, Owasso, WI.
In the graduate student division, the ISU team placed third overall with a second place finish in fresh meat judging and a third place finish in questions. Brian Patterson, Bloomington, WI, was the seventh high individual in the contest as well as third in fresh meat judging, fourth in questions, and fifth in processed meat judging, Taylor Wolfer, Morris, IL, finished tenth in the overall contest, and was fourth in fresh meat judging, ninth in specifications, and tenth in questions. Amanda Outhouse, Defiance, IA, was seventh in specifications and eighth in fresh meat judging. McKenna Powell, Indianapolis, IN, was the high individual in the overall contest.
