Alumni Spotlight: Matthew Lansing, Alta Genetics
Matthew Lansing graduated from Iowa State in 2019 with a B.S. in Animal Science and a minor in general business. Post-graduation, he began working as a Dairy Business Manager for Alta Genetics. In this role, he does genetic consulting for dairies across Iowa and Nebraska. He also assists dairies with heifer inventory forecasting, calf management, colostrum management, breeding strategies and record analysis.
Matthew credits Iowa State and the Department of Animal Science for helping prepare him for this role at Alta Genetics. His favorite class was AN S 434, Dairy Systems Management, where he learned real-life applications and concepts that he uses in the field. “This class taught me how to think outside the box and challenged me with real-life situations that I now face today at my job.”
During his time as an undergrad student, Matthew was an active member in Block and Bridle, the Dairy Science Club and TAAP (Transfer Admissions Ambassador Program). “I was able to get out of my comfort zone and learn how to be adaptable and teach others,” he says about his experiences.
Matthew encourages students to make the most of their time at Iowa State and take advantage of the endless opportunities available on campus. “Step out of your comfort zone and try new things. Be actively involved and join at least one club outside of your major.” He believes it’s important to meet new people and see things from different perspectives. “Never stop challenging yourself,” he reminds students, “learning is a life-long thing, so don’t stop after you graduate. Try new things!”
