Alumni Spotlight: Logan Lafrenz

Logan LafrenzLogan Lafrenz received his Bachelor’s degree in animal science with a minor in general business in 2017. During his time at Iowa State, he was a member of Alpha Gamma Rho Fraternity, ACES Learning Community, Cardinal Key Honor Society, and served as President for the Block & Bridle Club. Today, he works as a District Sales Manager for Kent Nutrition Group in Southeast Iowa.

In his role with Kent Nutrition Group, Logan spends the majority of his time on the road traveling to Kent Feed’s dealerships and other retail locations managing their sales accounts and making sure that they have the proper training and information to grow their business. In addition, Logan spends time out in the field helping livestock producers find solutions to a problem or make their operation as efficient as possible through better nutrition. “My aim is to help customers meet their goals despite challenges in the weather or setbacks in the markets. Seeing customers succeed is the most rewarding part of my job.” Logan is able to better serve this customer base by applying the knowledge he gained at Iowa State. His favorite classes, ANS 427: Cow Calf Management and ANS 319: Animal Nutrition, directly translate into his daily task of helping producers better the nutrition program for their livestock operation.

Logan credits ISU for helping prepare him for his future in two ways - education and involvement. “I apply what I learned in the classroom on a daily basis,” said Logan. Species-specific and animal science discipline courses help him relate to his customers and understand the nutritional needs of livestock. “My leadership and involvement on campus has allowed me to be an effective leader and communicator in the work force.” Logan encourages all students to get involved and hold a position/role in a group, club or organization. Learning how to work and communicate with a team towards a common goal is very valuable and relevant to situations that students may find themselves in post-graduation.

Are you involved in any professional associations? Why should students stay involved post-graduation?

“I have attended the annual NCBA conference, am a member of Iowa Cattlemen’s Association and try to stay active in my County Cattlemen’s Association. I was also an active member of the Young Cattlemen’s Leadership Program in 2019. I feel that it is important to remain involved and stay active within the field that you are passionate about. These organizations give you the opportunity to develop yourself as a professional and will allow you to have a voice in driving our industry forward.”

Do you have any career/life advice for students in the department of animal science?

“Never stop growing your network. Agriculture is a small but powerful industry to be in that provides so many opportunities for those that want to make a difference. Be coachable and tackle each day with a positive attitude and mindset.”
