Department of Animal Science welcomes dairy specialist Gail Carpenter

Gail Carpenter is joining Iowa State this semester as an Assistant Professor of Teaching in Dairy Production. Carpenter’s background includes experience in research, teaching and outreach in applied dairy cattle nutrition and management.

Dr. Dan Thomson, animal science department chair said, “Gail Carpenter is going to be a great addition to our dairy science program. She has been an incredibly successful teacher and has spent the last few years in the barn as a dairy consultant. The combination of research and teaching experience with practice in the field will result in an incredible training environment for our students. She will also make great contributions at our dairy through research and outreach."

Carpenter was most recently a dairy nutritionist for CSA Animal Nutrition. She brings an extensive amount of experience from the industry. Prior to her work at CSA Animal Nutrition, Carpenter was an assistant professor at the University of Guelph in the Department of Animal Biosciences.

Carpenter will be teaching undergraduate courses on lactation and applied dairy farm evaluation. She is also working to revive the Dairy Challenge Team at Iowa State. The addition of Carpenter further strengthens the positive impact on future dairy industry professionals.

“My goal is to teach students to pull together the concepts that they learned throughout their undergraduate careers and develop the skills to apply them in an ever-evolving industry. More than just delivering class content, my objective is to guide the next generation of dairy leaders to success,” Carpenter said.
