Iowa State Judging Team Shines at 2021 World Dairy Expo

On September 27th, 2021 the Iowa State University Dairy Judging Team comprised of Amanda Engelken, Earlville, IA; Anna Hanson, Decorah, IA; Brianna McBride, Severance, CO; and Jessica Schmitt, Fort Atkinson, IA; graced the revered colored shavings at the 100th Intercollegiate Dairy Cattle Judging Contest held at World Dairy Expo in Madison, WI.  Team members managed to mark strong cards and talk the cattle classes well in the reasons room which allowed for a strong showing at the national contest. 

Team highlights include placing 7th in Ayrshires, 8th in Milking Shorthorns, and 10th in Red and Whites.  In the Brown Swiss breed, Amanda was 3rd and the team was 4th.  Amanda went on to place 9th in Guernseys while her teammate Brianna was 4th and the team finished 2nd.  Jessica Schmitt worked her way to the top of the Holstein breed finishing 1st and the team placed 8th.  Brianna won the Jersey breed and the team placed 2nd.  Brianna was 6th overall in reasons and the team sorted into 9th place.  In the placings division, Brianna was 14th, Jessica was 11th, and Amanda was 1st

For individual overall standings, ISU had three team members in the top 25, which means these individuals are All-Americans, those individuals are as follows:  Jessica was 16th, Amanda was 10th, and Brianna was 8th.  As a team, Iowa State placed 3rd overall in the contest out of 14 teams and was the only team from the Midwest to place in the top 3.  Clearly, ISU had a great day on the colored shavings and the team is looking forward to competing again in Louisville at the North American International Livestock Exposition in November.
