Jake Sterle had the honor of receiving the Florence Smith Powers Scholarship from the North American Meat Institute and was recently awarded the Outstanding Senior and L.N. Hazel Awards at the Iowa State University Department of Animal Science Banquet. These awards are representative of his years as an active student leader within the department.
Growing up with livestock, he always knew he wanted to pursue a degree in animal science. "Iowa State offered me a strong curriculum on the swine side and other exciting opportunities to broaden my perspective like studying abroad and being involved on campus." Jake is a member of Alpha Gamma Rho Fraternity, has served as Block and Bridle president, been a tri-chair for Bacon Expo, an animal science peer mentor, and has been involved with An-Cy Guides, academic quadrathlon, the meats quiz bowl team, and the ISU Blood Drive.
Jake is pursuing his Master's of Business Administration through the concurrent MBA program offered by the Department of Animal Science and College of Business. The program only adds one extra year of school and allows him to hone his business skills, gain a more diverse experience working with others, and learn about various topics from financing and accounting to supply chain management.
"Students have the same credit limit as an undergrad, but classes are faster paced – it's definitely manageable and having an advanced degree won't hurt you in the long run," Jake said.
The Department of Animal Science has prepared Jake for his continuing education and future career by providing foundational knowledge, engaging clubs, and a network of professors and students. Jake encourages students to make the most out of their undergraduate years. "Find your passion and what you enjoy doing and keep building connections along the way."
