Department of Animal Science Welcomes Dr. Edison Magalhaes

Edison Magalhaes

The Department of Animal Science at Iowa State University welcomes Dr. Edison Magalhaes as an Assistant Professor with a focus on swine research and extension.

"I'm thrilled to join the Department of Animal Science. My extensive collaboration with swine companies has given me a deep understanding of applying data science to real-world production challenges,” said Magalhaes.

Magalhaes was most recently a Postdoctoral Research Associate in the Department of Veterinary Diagnostic and Production Animal Medicine (VDPAM) in the College of Veterinary Medicine at Iowa State University. He also has extensive industry experience with Brazil Foods Company as a Swine Veterinary Practitioner, and as a swine production manager at Farol Agronegócios, and as a wean-to-finish manager with Grupo Produzir S.A.

“In this role, I am excited to continue leveraging my expertise in swine epidemiology and data science to develop innovative research and extension programs aimed at addressing the evolving needs of swine producers. My goal is to create data-driven solutions that promotes precision swine health and productivity."

Magalhaes completed his PhD in Population Science in Animal Health at Iowa State University in 2023, following his Master of Science degree in Veterinary Preventative Medicine at Iowa State and his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from the Universidade Federal de Uberlândia in Uberlândia MG, Brazil. His current research is focused on identifying whole-herd drivers of wean-to-finish mortality and developing algorithms to analyze data streams collected from swine producers.

Also, Magalhaes currently serves as the chair of the U.S. Swine Health Improvement Plan (US SHIP) Market Haul Sanitation Group and is mentoring several graduate students. He has been recognized with several honors including a Teaching Excellence Award at Iowa State University in 2023, the best oral presentation at the International Pig Veterinary Society conference in 2022, and as the Best Field Veterinarian at Brazil Foods S.A (Uberlandia unit) in 2018.

“We are fortunate to have Dr. Magalhaes join our department.  Edison is a brings an exceptional background of pork production knowledge and has coupled that to forging novel strategies that integrate data and information through analytics and machine learning approaches. His program will support the ability of pork producers to make research-based decisions in real-time to improve their production practices,” said Jason Ross, Chair of the Department of Animal Science.

“His skill set further strengthens our globally recognized swine program and elevates our capacity to deliver on the land grant mission of Iowa State University.”
