Iowa State animal science class learns about beef and pork commercial production

The Animal Science 3600 class – Fresh Meat Science and Applied Muscle Biology- has been on the road to learn about beef and pork commercial production. The class traveled to Ottumwa to visit the JBS Pork Processing Facility. The class had a comprehensive visit filled with examples of amazing technology and innovation to show continuous improvement in producing safe, high-quality pork efficiently. We appreciate the time that the great team at JBS took with us to learn about their operations.

The class also visited Upper Iowa Beef and had an excellent opportunity to visit with their team specializing in high-quality beef production through partnerships and collaboration with Iowa and regional cattle producers. A special treat at Upper Iowa is a chance to visit many ISU Animal Science and CALS Alums. We appreciate their time and hospitality.

Our field trips help us emphasize the “Science with Practice” ethic at Iowa State University. We are grateful for our meat industry colleagues, ISU alums, and friends who welcome our students and strengthen our curriculum.
