Alumni Spotlight: Dave McDonald

Growing up on a century farm near Ryan, Iowa, Dave McDonald learned the value of hard work along with the power of family and community support at a young age. McDonald, along with his five siblings, grew up raising hogs, corn, and oats. These experiences sparked his passion for agriculture and, ultimately, led him to a lifelong career in the food industry.  Dave McDonald

During his time at Iowa State, McDonald pursued a degree in animal science, where he found most interest in science-based courses such as meat science and genetics. His love for problem-solving and learning allowed him to thrive as an animal science student. Outside of the classroom, McDonald seized every opportunity he could to meet new people and make a difference on campus. He was actively involved in Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity (AGR), VEISHEA, the Student Alumni Organization, Senior Class Council, and various intramural sports.

In his junior year, McDonald obtained a summer internship with the OSI Group – a global food provider that partners with leading foodservice and retail brands. This experience developed his interest in the food industry and altered his plans to attend graduate school. After completing his internship and graduating with a degree in animal science, McDonald joined OSI Group full time and has remained a committed team member for the past 38 years.  He is now Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and oversees, among other things, company strategy, execution, and customer engagement. “If we lose sight of our customers and consumers, we lose sight of our purpose; to provide nutritious delicious food for the families we serve,” McDonald said. His dedication to the OSI Group, its customers, and the food industry is demonstrated through his work. McDonald often travels internationally to tackle challenges and develop solutions for customers around the world. He also serves on the Executive Board of the Meat Institute and is a member of the Farm Foundation, a non-profit organization whose mission is to find solutions to important challenges facing farmers and the food industry - activities which McDonald said continue to fulfill his passion for problem-solving and community service.

McDonald encourages students to challenge themselves as he did, and step outside of their comfort zones. “Get to know people outside of your comfortable circle,” he advises. “Everyone you meet at Iowa State can give you different perspectives to help you grow.”

Reflecting on his time as an animal science student, McDonald truly enjoyed his experiences, and his Cyclone pride runs deep. “I’m proud to be an ISU alum and to see the progress that Iowa State and the animal science department continue to make,” he shared.
