Alumni Spotlight: Gabby DiRusso

Gabby DiRusso - Iowa State animal science alumGabby DiRusso, a 2020 graduate of Iowa State University’s Department of Animal Science, has turned her appreciation for livestock and hands-on learning into a successful career in the animal health industry.

DiRusso chose the Iowa State University Department of Animal Science program because of its diverse opportunities for growth and development. “Iowa State was appealing because it offered both a strong academic foundation and real-world experience,” DiRusso said. “The emphasis on hands-on work in addition to coursework was crucial for me. I knew I wanted to pair the science behind animal production with practical, real-world applications.”

During her time at Iowa State, DiRusso was deeply involved in undergraduate research, an experience that shaped her career trajectory. She worked in various labs, including the Ruminant Nutrition Lab and the College of Veterinary Medicine, gaining valuable experience that would set her apart in the industry. “Undergrad research was instrumental in preparing me for a career in animal health,” DiRusso says. “It gave me a deep understanding of industry research and taught me the importance of continuous improvement efforts within the industry.”

In addition to research, DiRusso took advantage of multiple internships, including a summer position with Schiff Farms of Nebraska and Elanco Animal Health as a cattle sales intern in Nebraska. These internships provided practical experience and helped her build a network in the field.

Outside of the classroom, DiRusso was active in leadership roles. She served as the president of the Meat Interest Group in the Block and Bridle Club, was an assistant coach for the Intercollegiate Meat Judging Team and was a College of Agriculture and Life Sciences ambassador. These roles taught her the value of collaboration and leadership, skills she continues to use in her career.

After graduation, DiRusso joined Elanco, a global animal health company, as a cattle sales representative. She has since held various roles with Elanco, including three sales representative roles throughout Illinois, Kansas, Texas. Now, she serves as a Farm Animal Dairy Marketer in Indiana.

In these roles, she strives to educate producers to implement new technologies and best practices aimed at improving productivity and profitability. “The most rewarding part of my job is helping producers achieve their goals and make their operations more sustainable, so they can pass it to the next generation,” DiRusso said. “I’m lucky to work with a company that brings innovative solutions to the industry, and it’s gratifying to know I can contribute to making a small difference in their daily operations and livelihood.”

One of the most fulfilling aspects of her career is the opportunity to mentor and inspire the next generation of animal scientists. “I love seeing the passion and drive that Iowa State students bring to internships and the workforce,” DiRusso said. “Their enthusiasm for the industry reminds me of why I started this journey in the first place.”

As for advice for current undergraduates, DiRusso encourages students to remain open to change. “Don’t be afraid to deviate from the plan you set for yourself as an 18-year-old,” she said. “Your interests will evolve, and that’s okay. College is about learning who you are and seeking out new opportunities. Be open to growth, both academically and personally.”

For those entering the workforce, DiRusso emphasizes the importance of relationship-building. “People don’t care what you know, until they know how much you care. People are everything,” DiRusso said.

Through hard work, hands-on experience, and a commitment to learning, Gabby DiRusso is making an impact in the animal health industry while inspiring future generations of animal scientists.
