Iowa State University’s Horse Farm continues to improve the quality of its horses, which continues to gain greater recognition for Iowa State’s breeding program and more opportunities for students. Keenland hosted their annual January Horses of All Ages Sale January 13-15, 2025. ISU consigned with Wynnstay Sales owned by former Iowans, Tim and Nancy Hamlin.
Out of the thoroughbred foals born in 2024 in the Animal Science 3160 Equine Reproduction Lab, two foals were selected to be offered on the big stage. The two fillies were out of mares recently acquired as a gift from successful breeder, Allen Poindexter. The first one through the ring was a bay filly out of Eddie’s Sister by first year stallion Pinehurst. She was followed by a chestnut filly out of Iglesias by Thousand Words who saw his first 2 year old’s race in 2024 and finished the year 5th in the freshman stallion ratings for 2024. While 24 Eddies Sister did not meet her reserve, 24 Iglesias was successfully sold for $40,000.
In addition to being born during the AnS 3160 lab, the horses were a part of ANS 3170A and have been handled by many student employees and teaching assistants here at Iowa State.
