Department of Animal Science Welcomes Gustavo Gutierrez

Gustavo GutierrezThe Department of Animal Science at Iowa State University is pleased to welcome Gustavo Gutierrez as an Adjunct Associate Professor. With more than three decades of experience in teaching, animal breeding research, and international outreach, Gutierrez brings a globally-informed perspective to the department’s work in teaching, research, and extension.

“I’m happy to be back at Iowa State University, a place that played such an important role in my academic and professional journey,” said Gutierrez. “I’m eager to contribute through high-quality research and teaching, and I look forward to collaborating with faculty and students to make a meaningful impact both here in Iowa and internationally.”

Originally from Lima, Peru, Gutierrez earned his Ph.D. in Animal Breeding and Genetics from Iowa State University in 2010. His dissertation focused on genetic parameters for female fertility traits in dairy cattle using advanced statistical models. He holds a Master of Science and Bachelor’s degree in Animal Science from Universidad Nacional Agraria La Molina (UNALM), where he has served in multiple academic and leadership roles for over 30 years.

Gutierrez’s research interests include genetic improvement strategies for livestock in low-input systems, genomic evaluation tools, and the conservation of animal genetic resources. He has led and collaborated on numerous international research projects focused on cattle, alpacas, llamas, and guinea pigs--particularly in highland production systems across Latin America. His efforts have resulted in over 65 peer-reviewed publications, nine book chapters, and over 80 conference presentations.

In addition to his research, Gutierrez has developed and delivered training programs in animal genetics and genomics for producers, students, and technical advisors in Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador, and Argentina. His outreach work emphasizes building capacity for community-based breeding programs and improving smallholder livestock systems through science-based innovations.

“It’s a pleasure to have Gustavo joining our department as a faculty member. He previously earned his Doctor of Philosophy in Animal Breeding and Genetics from our department, and it’s great to have him come back to support our mission,” said Dr. Jason Ross, chair of the Department of Animal Science. “Not only does Gustavo have excellent expertise that will support our programs, he also has exceptional international experiences that will bring value to our classrooms and students as well.”

Iowa State University is excited to have Dr. Gutierrez rejoin its academic family and looks forward to the impact of his work on students, research, and outreach programs.
