Growing up on a diversified livestock and row crop farm outside of Mount Ayr, Iowa, Lindsey Jennett has been immersed in agriculture from an early age. Her family raises wean-to-finish hogs and broiler chickens, providing her with firsthand experience in animal husbandry and farm management. In addition to working on her family’s farm, Jennett became involved in a neighbor’s show lamb operation through 4-H, sparking her passion for the show stock industry that continues today. She remains actively engaged in both operations, assisting with herd management, lambing, and preparing livestock for shows. These experiences confirmed her love for animal agriculture and set her on the path to a career in veterinary medicine.
Jennett chose to pursue her education at Iowa State University, drawn in by the animal science department’s strong reputation, hands-on learning opportunities, and passionate faculty. “Once I learned about the Department of Animal Science at Iowa State, I never felt the need to explore any other options,” she shared. “With its top-tier resources, research opportunities, and industry connections, I knew this was the best place to prepare for my future.” From her very first animal science class, she felt confident that she had found the right fit.
On campus, Jennett is actively involved in Block and Bridle Club and Sigma Alpha, organizations that have allowed her to build valuable connections with fellow students who share her passion for agriculture. Beyond student organizations, she also works as an undergraduate research assistant and lab technician, gaining practical experience in reproductive physiology.
Jennett has further expanded her knowledge and skills through internships at ReproLogix in Fort Scott, KS, and Animal Medical Center in Great Bend, KS. At ReproLogix, she worked in an in-vitro fertilization lab, learning the intricacies of oocyte grading, embryo freezing, and semen preparation while maintaining lab sterilization protocols. Her time at Animal Medical Center provided her with hands-on experience in both small and large animal procedures, from administering vaccines and preparing animals for surgery to traveling on farm calls for livestock treatments. These opportunities have reinforced her passion for veterinary medicine and broadened her expertise in animal care.
Looking ahead, Jennett plans to attend Iowa State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine, specializing in large animal medicine and reproductive technologies. With a strong foundation in animal agriculture and veterinary practices, she is eager to apply her knowledge to support livestock producers and enhance reproductive management in the industry.
For incoming students, Jennett offers this piece of advice, “Take advantage of the knowledge available to you—whether in the classroom, through hands-on experiences, or by building relationships with professors, advisors, and fellow students. The connections you made and the lessons you learn outside of class are just as valuable as what’s in the textbooks!”
