Eleven students spent the summer alongside farm staff preparing the yearling horses for this sale. Sales preparation officially began in June with students learning about key concepts in horse training, nutrition, grooming and conditioning. The course finale is the ITBOA Fall Sale event where the students are able to present their assigned horses to prospective buyers and see the horses sell in the sales ring. Students were able to interact with other consignors, breeders and owners during the event.
Iowa State University students and staff presented a total 20 yearling horses in the 2026 rendition of the Iowa Thoroughbred Breeders and Owners Sale (11 owned by ISU, 8 by Allen Poindexter and 1 by Brodina Aspenson). Hip 34, a bay colt by Goldencents out of Miss Waikiki owned by Allen Poindexter set yet another record for the sale when he sold for $95,000. The colt was purchased by John Mentz of Minnesota.
In addition to presenting the sales topper, Iowa State University was this year's leading consignor by number of horses sold and sales revenue with 15 horses selling for a total of $491,500. Nine horses owned in part or entirely by ISU drew bids totaling $265,000.
