Student Spotlight: Grace Christensen

January 12, 2022

Grace ChristensenGrace Christensen, a senior in animal science from Audubon, Iowa, knew from the start that she would follow her family’s legacy and pursue further education at Iowa State University. Grace’s background in commercial hog production and livestock exhibition led her to her major in animal science. She is currently an active member in the Block & Bridle club, a tri-chair for Bacon Expo, and is a peer mentor for the Department of Animal Science this year.

To add to Grace’s already impressive resume, she has taken the opportunity to complete multiple internships. This year Grace received the chance to work for Iowa Pork Producers Association as their legislative intern. She was able to see the industry from a different viewpoint and experience the grassroots side of the organization. As a part of her internship, she traveled to Washington, DC, where she spent time in Senator Grassley’s office.  Over the previous summer, Grace was an intern for Choice Genetics in West Des Moines, Iowa. Here she learned the ins and outs of sow production and genetics. Choice Genetics also allowed Grace to learn about developments in electronic feed management systems and the constant technological progress the swine industry makes. Grace appreciated the opportunity to experience and observe a smaller, more specialized section of the industry.

Grace is most proud of her ability to get outside of her comfort zone and try things that make her uncomfortable, explaining that she has pushed herself in college more than she had ever previously thought and has gained many experiences and skills doing so! When asked if she has a favorite professor at Iowa State, she immediately thought of Dr. Laura Greiner, saying that she has the unique ability to explain topics from the ground up and keeps the class engaged with hands-on experiences. Grace highly recommends Dr. Greiner’s ANS 480 C – Pork Fellows class to anyone with a passion for the swine industry. After graduation, Grace plans to apply for Iowa State’s concurrent MBA program and follow her love of business and people into the swine industry.

Grace’s advice for new students:

“Try things even if you don’t think you will like them, and don’t be set on one specific plan; go with the flow!”
