Sophomore Scholarships

Duane & Shirley Acker International Fellowship $1000

  1. The recipient shall use this award to participate in an international experience that may include, but is not limited to: study abroad programs; internship or work at an international agricultural research center, institute, or university; foreign work experience with USDA's Foreign Agriculture Service or the Agency for International Development; internship or work with a foreign or domestic private sector business
  2. The recipient shall be majoring in Animal Science or a related curriculum administered by the Department of Animal Science
  3. First preference shall be given to students who are graduates of a high school in Iowa
  4. Second preference shall be given to students who are graduates of a high school in Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Nebraska, Minnesota, Missouri, South Dakota, or Wisconsin
  5. The amount of the award shall be based on the available funding, but shall not be less than half of the recipient's cost to participate in their respective international experience
  6. The Department of Animal Science shall provide the Office of Student Financial Aid a budget adjustment form outlining the costs to be incurred by each recipient so that the student's overall financial aid package is not adversely affected
  7. Attach a statement of plans and budget for your international experience with application form

Allen E. Christian Swine Industry Scholarship $1500

The recipient(s) must be:

  1. Enrolled full-time in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences
  2. Have experience in the livestock industry, preferably with swine; experience may include, but is not limited to, 4H, FFA, Judging Teams, ISU Swine Teaching or Research Farms, or other practical experience
  3. Preference shall be given to students with demonstrated career interests in the swine industry
  4. Applicants must provide a written paragraph detailing their livestock industry experience, especially with swine and include a statement of career goals and plans relating to the swine industry

Arthur Molln Scholarship     $1000

The recipient(s) must:

  1. Be undergraduate students in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences
  2. Be majoring in Animal Science
  3. Have demonstrated a genuine and sincere interest in pursuing a career in animal science
  4. Be making acceptable academic progress toward a degree

Bob Pim Memorial Scholarship in Animal Science      $3250

NOTE: The total value of this award may be equally divided between more than one recipient.
The recipient(s) must:

  1. Be a resident of Iowa
  2. Be a sophomore or junior student in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and Department of Animal Science, with at least 2 semesters remaining at Iowa State University.
  3. Have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or greater
  4. May receive the scholarship up to a limit of two years
  5. Applicants for this scholarship must present a written summary of:
    1. leadership and extracurricular activities, college and high school
    2. work experience
    3. personal goals and objectives for the future
    4. three (3) letters of recommendation
  6. The top three candidates will be selected by the Animal Science Scholarship and Awards Committee to interview with the Pim family, who will then select the award winner

Charles R. and Ethel P. Mountain Scholarship Award in Animal Science    $500

  1. Award shall be open to any undergraduate in the Department of Animal Science
  2. Selection is based upon:
    1. Scholarship
    2. Overall contribution to fellow students and the department, rather than need

Charles and Edna Parmele Scholarship in Animal Science Fund    $500

  1. Open to students pursuing an education in the Department of Animal Science
  2. Preference given to those students with financial need

Curt Askelson Scholarship for Animal Science    $1000

The recipient(s) must:

  1. Be enrolled in the Department of Animal Science
  2. Preference shall be given to students who are not members of a fraternity or sorority as determined by the administrating authority

David and Jacqueline Topel Scholarship in Animal Science     $1000

The recipient(s) must:

  1. Be pursuing an undergraduate degree in the Department of Animal Science
  2. Have promise of a career related to animal science
  3. Exhibit excellence in scholarship including a GPA of 3.0 or greater from the preceding college year
  4. Have demonstrated leadership and involvement in campus activities

Dennis L. Crone Scholarships in Animal Science    $1000

The recipient(s) must:

  1. Be a resident of Iowa
  2. Be pursuing an undergraduate degree in Animal Science
  3. Have a GPA of at least 3.0 from high school or the preceding college year
  4. Have promise of a career in animal science
  5. Qualify for financial aid
  6. Students may receive the scholarship for up to a limit of four consecutive years if the student continues to meet the original criteria for qualification

Donald W. Helble Scholarship in Animal Science    $1500

The recipient(s) must:

  1. Be enrolled in a major offered by the Department of Animal Science
  2. Demonstrate a cumulative minimum GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale
  3. First preference shall be given to applicants who reside in either Scott or Clinton County
  4. Second preference shall be given to applicants who are members of Iowa State University's Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity

Doug and Carol Kenealy International Travel Scholarship    $1000

The recipient(s) must:

  1. Be enrolled in a major in the Department of Animal Science
  2. Be participating in a study abroad program with selection priority according to the following:
    1. Traveling on an Animal Science sponsored (AnS 496) international travel course
    2. Traveling on a College of Agriculture and Life Sciences sponsored international travel course
    3. Traveling on an Iowa State University sponsored international travel course or completing an international university exchange program

Dr. and Mrs. M. E. Ensminger Scholarships     $1000

Priority shall be given to Animal Science and/or foreign students, either undergraduate or graduate students, for the continuation of their studies only. A special committee will review applications and make selections.
Recipients shall be selected on the basis of:

  1. Scholarship
  2. Character
  3. Financial Need
  4. Leadership

Dudley R. Scott Endowed Scholarship in Animal Science     $750

  1. Open to undergraduate students majoring in Animal Science
  2. Selection is based upon:
    1. academic excellence
    2. financial need

Eldred J. and Donna Harman Endowed Scholarships in Animal Science     $1500

The recipient(s) must:

  1. Be pursuing a degree in Animal Science in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Iowa State University
  2. Be citizens of the United States
  3. Have demonstrated financial need
  4. The high school applicants shall have a 2.5 GPA and be in the top 33% of their graduating class. They shall also have been active in 4-H or FFA and demonstrate definite interest in agriculture
  5. The college applicants shall have a 2.5 GPA and shall have demonstrated initiative, drive, and a strong desire to pursue a career in animal science or agriculture

Harold L. and Esther G. Wilcke Scholarship     $1500

The recipient(s) must:

  1. Have demonstrated genuine interest in and be studying or doing research in the nutritional requirements of domestic animals or poultry
  2. Be enrolled in a curriculum of Animal Science or Poultry Science
  3. Be undergraduate or graduate students

Helen M. Maddock Scholarship for Women in Animal Science    $500

The recipient(s) must:

  1. Be a legal resident of the United States
  2. Be a female student pursuing an undergraduate degree in Animal Science
  3. Have a 3.0 GPA from high school or the preceding college year
  4. Have promise for a career research
  5. Demonstrate an interest in and a commitment to pursuing a career in research and/or livestock production. Preference shall be given to students who are working toward a career in swine research and/or production
  6. Qualify for financial need
  7. Qualifying student may receive scholarship on consecutive years up to a limit of four years

Iowa Poultry Association Scholarship, in Honor of Tom J. Zanios    $1000

The recipient(s) must:

  1. Be pursuing a degree program in Poultry Nutrition, Genetics or Economics and/or
  2. Be intending to be involved in the poultry industry in Iowa

Iowa Turkey Federation Scholarships     $1000

The recipient(s) must:

  1. Be a resident of Iowa
  2. Be pursuing an undergraduate degree in the College of Agriculture
  3. May receive the scholarship on consecutive years up to a limit of four years
  4. First preference shall be given to students who have promise of a career in the turkey industry or to students (or students whose families) involved in any aspect of the turkey industry: for example, family turkey operations, employment in the turkey industry, individual production, 4H or FFA projects, etc.

James J. Kiser Scholarship in Animal Science     $1000

The recipient(s) must:

  1. Be enrolled in or admitted to the College of Agriculture
  2. Be majoring in Animal Science
  3. Demonstrate a cumulative 2.75 GPA or above on a 4.0 grade point scale
  4. Preference shall be given to students who display leadership and participation in school and community activities as evidenced by such things as active participation/leadership role in a recognized student organization, active participation/leadership role in a professional organization, honors and awards received and/or active participation/leadership role in community service as determined by the awarding authority

Jeff Hansen/Iowa Select Farms Pork Industry Scholarship    $1250

The recipient(s) must:

  1. Be a resident of Iowa
  2. Be enrolled in the Department of Animal Science
  3. Be taking courses to prepare them for a career in the pork industry as determined by the Scholarship Committee
  4. All scholarships awarded hereunder shall be for one year, but may be received for additional years provided the student continues to meet required criteria

Kermit & Janis Coggshall Scholarship in Animal Science $1700

The recipient(s) must:

  1. Be enrolled in or admitted to the College of Agriculture
  2. Be majoring in Animal Science
  3. Demonstrate a cumulative grade point average of 2.75 or above on a 4 point scale
  4. Preference shall be given to students who display leadership and participate in school, professional organizations and community service activities. Evidence of this involvement may include such things as holding office, serving on a committee, or receiving honors and awards from a recognized student, professional or community organization as determined by the awarding authority

Palmer and Sheryl Holden International Travel Scholarship     $1000

  1. Open to an undergrad major in Animal Science
  2. To provide funds for an independent international travel experience (attach a statement of plans and budget for your international experience with your application form)
  3. First preference is for independent travel; second preference is for participation in a travel course

Rufus Chauncey Obrecht Scholarship     $1250

Open to a worthy undergraduate student in Animal Science who meets or exceeds the following criteria:

  1. Academic excellence
  2. Activities at ISU & in the livestock industry
  3. Financial need

Solon A. and Dorothy F. Ewing Animal Science Scholarships    $1000

The recipient(s) must:

  1. Be majoring in Animal Science
  2. Have a GPA of 2.50 or higher from his/her second year in high school or former year in college
  3. Have demonstrated interest in a career in animal science and shall appear to possess the ability to pursue and sustain a career in animal science
  4. A student may receive a scholarship in subsequent years, but not to exceed four academic years
  5. Present evidence of Financial Need

Thomas Ringkob Scholarship in Animal Science     $500

  1. Open to sophomore or junior students enrolled full-time at Iowa State University and majoring in Animal Science
  2. Selection is based upon:
    1. academic excellence
    2. financial need

Tom and Cindy Baas Swine Industry Scholarship    $1250

The recipient(s) must:

  1. Be enrolled in the Department of Animal Science
  2. Demonstrate an interest in exploring a career in the pork industry
  3. Preference shall be given to a student with a cumulative GPA of 2.75 or greater on a 4.0 scale
  4. Preference shall be given to a student who has demonstrated leadership through activities in the college

    Award shall be for 1 year, recipient may receive the award for up to 2 additional years, but must reapply and continue to adhere to the above criteria

Tom and Corrine Lonergan Scholarship     $1500

The recipient(s) must:

  1. Be enrolled as a student in the Animal Science Department
  2. Have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale
  3. Preference shall be given to applicants who demonstrate financial need

Tom and Janie Wickersham Scholarship     $1000

  1. Recipient must be enrolled in Department of Animal Science
  2. First preference of recipients is for sophomore students in Animal Science with a strong interest and/or experience in the sheep industry. In the event a sophomore student is not available or eligible, the award may be made to a student of junior standing.
  3. Second preference of recipients is for students of any classification whose interest is in continuing in graduate studies. For students selected based on interest in graduate studies, any field of study in the animal sciences will be considered appropriate, including those which may relate to the sheep enterprise.
  4. Selection will be based upon academic performance in addition to career interest as appropriate
