The Animal Science/Dairy Science Learning Community
All Animal Science and Dairy Science students are automatically enrolled in the AN S/DY S learning community in their first semester at Iowa State University. As part of the learning community, students are expected to complete the Animal Science Orientation course (AN S 110) in their first semester, whether they are an incoming freshman or a transfer student. The AN S/DY S learning community does not have a residential component, therefore students are welcome to live in the dormitory or apartment of their choice. Through the program, students are matched with a peer mentor and 8-12 other new students who share similar interests and career goals. The peer mentor group meets on a weekly basis during the first semester as part of the AN S 110 course. During these sessions, the peer mentor will help their group prepare for classes, become familiar with campus, design a course plan, and coordinate fun on or off-campus activities. The learning community also offers linked sections of English and Biology courses. These sections are restricted to Animal and Dairy Science majors, so that peer groups can attend these classes together.
