2016 American Royal Meat Judging


 

Southeastern Intercollegiate Meat Judging Contest

The ISU team earned 4th place honors at the 2016 Southeastern Intercollegiate Meat Judging Contest held in April in Columbus, OH and Lexington, KY.  The Cyclones finished with divisional honors:  3rd in beef grading, specifications, and pork judging; and 4th in reasons. Individual honors included: Austin Egolf (Dillsburg, PA) – 8th high individual in contest, 1st in placings, 6th in beef judging, and 7th in specifications; Michaela Fevold (Story City) – 1st in beef judging; Michael Stender (Aurelia) – 5th in specifications and 6th in beef grading;  Paige Whitney (Ida Grove) – 5th in reasons and 9th in specifications;  Rachel Wynn (Bedford, IN) – 4th high individual in contest, 6th in reasons, and 7th in pork judging; Laura Yoder (Kalona) – 7th high individual in contest, 3rd in beef grading, and 8th in overall beef. Zack Peppmeier (Shannon City) is also a team member.

2016 Hormel National Barrow Show Meat Judging Contest

The 2016 Hormel National Barrow Show Intercollegiate Meat Judging Contest was held in mid-September at the Hormel Research and Development Facility in Austin, MN. This contest tested students on their knowledge of fresh and processed pork products. The team finished fourth in the overall contest and won the processed meat division. In the processed meat division, Fevold was second high individual; Yoder was sixth; and Egolf was eighth. Peppmeier was eighth high individual in the overall contest.  In the alternate division, Whitney was the high individual; and Wynn was fourth. Stender also competed in the event.

2016 American Royal Intercollegiate Meat Judging Contest

The 2016 American Royal Intercollegiate Meat Judging Contest presented by Elanco Animal Health and hosted by Nebraska Beef, Omaha, NE was held in mid-October.  The team was 3rd in beef grading; 4th in overall beef; 7th in beef judging and reasons; and 10th in pork judging and total placings. In the contest the ISU team finished in 9th place.  Stender was 3rd high individual in beef grading and 7th high individual in lamb judging. Additional team members competing included: Austin Egolf, Michaella Fevold, Zack Peppmeier, Paige Whitney, Rachel Wynn, and Laura Yoder.

High Plains Intercollegiate Meat Judging Contest

The High Plains was held in late October and hosted by Cargill Meat Solutions, Friona, TX. The team was 4th in beef grading and finished 9th in the contest. Michael Stender (Aurelia) was 3rd in specifications and Zack Peppmeier (Shannon City) was 10th in beef grading and overall beef. Rachel Wynn (Bedford, IN) was 9th high individual in the alternate division. Stender and Laura Yoder (Kalona) put up perfect scores of 100 on the specification rail. The team is preparing for the national intercollegiate meat judging contest – The International – that will be hosted by Tyson Fresh Meats in Dakota City, NE, on Sunday, November 13, 2016.

2017 National Western Intercollegiate Meat Judging Contest

The 2017 Iowa State University Meat Judging Team placed 7th in the National Western Intercollegiate Meat Judging Contest hosted by JBS, Greeley, CO. In the divisions the team placed as follows: 5th - pork judging and total placings, 6th - beef grading and overall beef, 7th - reasons, 8th - lamb carcasses, and 9th - beef judging and specifications.

Austin Lanphier, New Sharon, finished 10th in total placings; Taylor Wulf, Hudson, finished 9th in overall beef; and Beth Zuber, Marengo, finished 9th in pork judging.

Annika Johnson, Hartford; Stephanie Martin, Vincent; and Drew Wilson, Delhi, complete this team. The team is coached by Sherry Olsen; Michaella Fevold, Story City; Rachel Wynn, Bedford, IN; Laura Yoder, Kalona.

The next contest for the team is the 39th Annual Iowa State University Meat Evaluation Contest held on February 11, 2017.
